what is it you plan to do with your one, precious attention span?

The director of Inside Out 2 shared this quietly devastating one-minute story about looking back on childhood birthday photos.

This video makes the case that at its core Napoleon Dynamite (which turns 20 this year!) is just Rocky with different aesthetics.

It’s been two months since I finished watching The Expanse, and I still can’t stop thinking about it. The writing is tight. The characters are complex. The future is this realistically flawed place, despite the advanced medical technology, universal basic income and gender equality on Earth. The trailer for the show does not do it justice, but I think this compilation of savage lines from one incredibly well-dressed and powerful character, Chrisjen Avasarala, is a better sell.

My sister sent me this RuPaul interview on the Ten Percent Happier podcast. I love what Ru says about disco and dancing. I enjoyed hearing him talk about his spiritual practices. The host makes up for some of his stiffness by giving Ru a luxurious amount of runway to answer questions without interruption.
This month’s playlist includes:
Many songs from the Umbrella Academy soundtrack.
‘Sittin’ On the Dock of the Bay’, which lives with Hey Ya in the hall of fame of chill songs with truly tragic lyrics.
My favorite saccharine Dashboard Confessional song 4ever.
ETC.
This Mary Oliver poem inspired the subhed. My friend Barb is reading Oliver’s Upstream that has this other passage on attention:
“In the beginning I was so young and such a stranger to myself I hardly existed. I had to go out into the world and see it and hear it and react to it, before I knew at all who I was, what I was, what I wanted to be. Attention is the beginning of devotion.”
I’ve launched a new newsletter called Deconstructing Money:
I’m documenting what I’m learning as I train to become a certified financial coach (AFC) and documenting the journey that got me to this point: paying down all of my graduate student loan debt in two years using a public radio salary in New York.
That period of time taught me so much about the systems we live in that make managing money difficult and what we can do about it. Subscribe if you think you’d be into it.
Cheers -
