I got married! Here’s the playlist I handed the DJ for inspo.
I don’t like most poems, but this isn’t most poems.
The only playlist I made this month is my honeymoon playlist. I started making it as we waited for our plane to Puerto Rico to board and finished it on our last day—a little souvenir.
My favorite song on it is one that came out of the land itself. On walks, in our rental car, we kept passing these beautiful trees with coral red flowers in full bloom. We looked up the name of the tree - Poinciana - and my ex-boyfriend, who used to be a pro-jazz musician, told me that’s the name of a classic song, and that a prodigy named Ahmad Jamal has a beautiful live version of it. We played it on a loop the whole trip.I’m getting into birds, and there were so many cool ones in P.R. Like this yellow warbler that was fighting its reflection in our sideview mirror:
I’ve been paying more attention to bird song - it’s supposed to be really therapeutic for humans. Birds apparently sing when predators aren’t around. I read somewhere that they went quiet just before the Northridge earthquake.
I was journaling in Greenwood cemetery the other day and I heard one bird that was mimicking the songs of bunch of other birds in quick succession. A mixtape! Reminded me of this clip of a bower bird that was able to mimic the sound of children playing. For more on bower birds, this is a story I produced in another life.
‘til next time -
